When the week two topic for blog came out for the SAVMP, I was both excited and apprehensive. What is my Educational Philosophy?
Although it seems that a version of this question is asked at every interview, I'm not sure I ever really gave the same answer or truly had a passion for my response. It was this spring, however, as I applied for my first admin position, that I really sat down to wrestle with this question. I found the answer was actually very simple.
I was blessed to have spent the first four years of my career in three different school divisions teaching all grades, K-12. Granted, I didn't feel this was a blessing at the time, but I now realize that it was those early years that helped solidify my philosophy. I taught in three very different school divisions, teaching ESL, transient farm students, rural middle school students and city high school students and Fine Arts elementary students in a Cathilic division.
What I realized through this all was that kids are kids, no matter what age, culture or location and I love working with them all. It wasn't about my position, the grade or subject I was teaching. It is about my relationship with my students. They are key. I love learning about their interests, their dreams, their families, their passions and their goals. I want to let them into my life with the hope they will let me into theirs.
